Humility through affliction

HUMILITY THROUGH AFFLICTION

“I shall walk carefully all my years in the bitterness of my soul.”
Isaiah 38:15 (NKJV)
It’s remarkable how life’s anguish and difficulties prompt us to reflect on our human condition and our relationship with God. When everything is going well and success seems constant, we may fall into pride, arrogance, or insensitivity toward others. However, in the midst of affliction, our hearts soften, and we become more aware of our need for God and our responsibility toward others.
Three Positive Effects of Affliction on Our Spiritual Life

  1. We Seek God More Intensely
In times of distress, our hearts become more receptive to God’s presence. We pray more fervently, seek His guidance, and depend on Him. Affliction reminds us of our total dependence on His grace and power.
  2. We Cultivate Humility
Difficulties teach us that we are not self-sufficient. We recognize our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, allowing us to abandon arrogance and walk humbly before God and others.
  3. We Develop Greater Sensitivity Toward Others
Experiencing pain makes us more empathetic and understanding of others’ struggles. It becomes easier to show patience, kindness, and generosity, allowing the fruit of the Holy Spirit to grow in our lives.

“O Lord, by these things men live; and in all these things is the life of my spirit; so You will restore me and make me live. Indeed it was for my own peace that I had great bitterness; but You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.”
Isaiah 38:16-17 (NKJV)
Reflect on This:

  1. What lessons have you learned in moments of affliction that have brought you closer to God?
  2. How can you maintain a humble and generous heart in times of success and prosperity?
  3. What changes can you make today to be more sensitive and loving toward those around you?
