Antidote for Stress

Antidote for Stress

“Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me.”
Psalm 59:1 (NLT)

Stress is an unavoidable reality of human life. All of us, at some point, experience pressure, distress, and emotional exhaustion. David also went through such moments, and in this psalm, he pours out his pain, frustration, and desperate cry. Unjustly pursued and attacked without cause, David turns to the only true source of relief: God as his refuge, his defender, his fortress. In the midst of chaos, he discovers he is not alone—and he teaches us that there is a divine antidote to the stress that threatens to destroy us.
1. Under Pressure and Stress
There are seasons when everything seems to pile up:
• The pressure of everyday problems
• Personal injustices or those done to people we love
• Abuse committed against innocent people
In those moments, the burden is overwhelming and the heart cries out just as David did:
“Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, Lord, though I have not sinned or offended them. I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me!”
Psalm 59:1–4 (NLT)
Emotions overflow, the soul is unsettled, and it feels like there’s no escape. But even in that desperation, David shows us a key: seek refuge in the presence of God.
2. The Antidote
In the midst of stress, there is a spiritual antidote available to all who believe. It is not found in ignoring problems or pretending they don’t hurt, but in running to God with trust and persistence.
Sing of His Power
Worship transforms the atmosphere of the soul. David declares:
“But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love.”
Psalm 59:16 (NLT)
Singing is not just an emotional expression—it’s a spiritual act that breaks internal chains, lifts the spirit, and shifts the atmosphere. In the middle of chaos, lift your voice. Worship, even if you’re trembling. Singing brings freedom.
Pray in My Secret Place
Stress is reduced when we enter the place where God dwells. The secret is not in escaping the world but in taking refuge in the One who reigns over all things:
“For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.”
Psalm 59:16 (NLT)
That secret place isn’t always physical. It could be a quiet moment in your room, in the car, while walking, or in a corner of the church. But it’s there that the soul finds peace.
Remember That God Is My Strength
David concludes with this declaration:
“O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love.”
Psalm 59:17 (NLT)
God is not a passive spectator of your distress. He is your present Strength, constant Refuge, and unfailing Love. He not only hears your prayer—He sustains you, protects you, and gives you rest.
3. Community as Medicine
David prayed alone, but he also worshiped in community. Going to church, gathering with others, singing together, listening to the Word, and sharing with fellow believers brings relief to a heavy heart. God created us to live in community, and fellowship brings healing. Don’t isolate yourself when you’re stressed—draw closer to the body of Christ.

“Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me.”
Psalm 59:1 (NLT)

Think About It:

  1. Where are you turning for refuge when stress overwhelms you?
  2. Have you made worship and prayer part of your routine to heal your soul?
  3. Are you isolating yourself, or are you allowing the community of faith to strengthen you?
