I Am an Eagle, Not a Chicken
“Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make its nest on high? On the rock it dwells and resides, on the crag of the rock and the stronghold. From there it spies out the prey; its eyes observe from afar.”
Job 39:27–29 (NKJV)
In this passage, God speaks to Job, revealing His sovereignty through creation. By mentioning the eagle, He highlights a creature designed to soar, to live above conflict and the ordinary. This powerful image not only describes the bird but also invites us to reflect on our identity in God. We are called to live with a higher mindset, a clear vision, and a firm purpose. We weren’t created to live low or settle for the ordinary, but to dwell in high places with an extraordinary spiritual perspective.
1. The eagle dwells in the heights
The eagle doesn’t build its nest just anywhere. It chooses the heights, far from noise and danger. It lives where few dare to reach—this is its nature. As believers, we were created to dwell in high places with God—in intimacy, worship, and holiness. We don’t need to lower ourselves into purposeless arguments or remain trapped in limited environments. Our spiritual position is above what the world considers important.
2. The eagle doesn’t feed on garbage
While the chicken pecks at the ground searching for worms, the eagle hunts for live, fresh, and nourishing food. It doesn’t settle for what’s within reach—it soars and seeks out what truly gives life. Likewise, a believer who lives like an eagle feeds on the living Word, on God’s presence, on spiritual food that strengthens. They don’t nourish themselves on gossip, distractions, or empty entertainment.
3. The eagle doesn’t fight over the chicken coop
You won’t see an eagle arguing with chickens over space or territory. It knows who it is and where it belongs. It doesn’t need to compete—its very nature gives it authority. In the same way, we are not called to petty rivalries or constant comparisons. When you know who you are in God, you stay focused, elevated, and at peace.
4. The eagle has extraordinary vision
One of the eagle’s greatest attributes is its eyesight. It’s designed to see with sharp detail from a great distance. It can spot its prey from high above and act with precision. In the same way, God gives us spiritual vision to discern, anticipate, and act wisely. We can’t live without direction. Those with eagle vision don’t live reacting to everything—they move forward with purpose.
5. The eagle acts from a higher perspective
From the heights, the eagle watches calmly, analyzes, and chooses the right moment to move. It’s not rushed or driven by chaos. Its position allows it to see the full picture. The believer who lives with an eagle mindset prays, listens, and acts according to the direction of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual altitude not only keeps you away from danger—it gives you perspective and strategy.
“Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make its nest on high? On the rock it dwells and resides, on the crag of the rock and the stronghold. From there it spies out the prey; its eyes observe from afar.”
Job 39:27–29 (NKJV)
Think About It:
- Are you spiritually dwelling in the heights, or have you settled in low places?
- What are you feeding your spirit: the high and eternal or the superficial and temporary?
- Is your spiritual vision focused, or do you need to rise higher to clearly see what God wants to show you?
