I Choose to Love What Is Eternal
Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down!”
Mark 13:2 (NKJV)
Jesus was leaving the temple with His disciples when they, amazed by the grandeur of the building, pointed out its magnificence. However, the Lord, with His eyes fixed on the eternal, replied with a truth that shakes the soul: everything that seems impressive and lasting in this world will pass away. This statement confronts us with a reality we often forget: material things are temporary, but there is something that lasts forever.
From this teaching, we understand that the heart of the believer must learn to discern between what is temporary and what is eternal. It’s not about despising what we have or achieve on this earth, but about understanding that our focus must be on what doesn’t wear out, break, or fade: God and people.
1. Everything Material Is Temporary
The most majestic buildings, the most valuable possessions, even our human accomplishments, are perishable. Jesus said it clearly: what we admire today may not exist tomorrow. That’s why we shouldn’t put our trust in what is fleeting.
2. True Riches Cannot Be Bought with Money
Having a home, a car, or a stable bank account can be part of God’s blessing, but they don’t represent eternal riches. True riches are found in restored relationships, healthy hearts, sincere love, strong faith, and fellowship with God.
3. People Are Eternal
Unlike things, people have an eternal destiny. Our relationships, the love we give and receive, the forgiveness we offer, are eternal seeds. Investing in people is investing in what has eternal value.
4. God Is Eternal and Deserves Our Greatest Affection
Loving God above all else aligns us with the eternal. He does not change, fade, or break. When our heart is focused on pleasing God, everything else falls into its proper place. His Word, His will, and His presence are eternal.
5. Loving What Is Eternal Transforms Our Daily Perspective
When we decide to love what is eternal, our priorities shift. We begin to enjoy moments with loved ones more deeply, we value peace at home, we laugh more often, and we learn to see life through the eyes of heaven. The eternal gives meaning to the everyday.
6. The Decision Is in Our Hands
Jesus teaches us that loving the eternal is a decision. It does not depend on circumstances, but on the focus of the heart. We can choose to love God and people more than things. And this decision transforms our life here on earth—and for eternity.

Think About It:
• Am I investing more time and energy in the temporary than in the eternal?
• How can I show real love to God and to those around me today?
• What decisions do I need to make to reorder my priorities in light of the eternal?
