The One the Lord Commends
“As the Scriptures say, ‘If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.’ When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.”
2 Corinthians 10:17–18 (NLT)
In a culture where self-promotion is often seen as the key to success, Paul gives us a countercultural, profound, and liberating perspective: it’s not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends. In the church at Corinth, some were boasting about their spiritual authority, promoting themselves, and elevating their achievements. But Paul, with wisdom and humility, reminds us that a person’s true worth is not found in their self-image but in the testimony God gives about them.
1. Let God commend you through others
There’s no need to force your recognition. God knows how to raise up His own at the right time, with the right people, and for His eternal purpose. When He is with you, others will notice—without you needing to announce it. Humility always finds its reward. It’s better to be spoken of because of what God is doing through you than because of what you say about yourself.
2. Let your acts of love speak for you
Christian character isn’t built with words—it’s proven through actions. Jesus taught that we would be known by our fruit. Generosity, service, compassion, and faithfulness speak louder than any speech. If you want to be remembered, make your love visible. That is your best letter of recommendation.
3. Let your integrity speak for you
You don’t need to defend your name—you need to live with integrity. Words can deceive, but character is revealed over time. A heart surrendered to God, a blameless walk, a gentle spirit—these are what God uses to speak well of you before others. Instead of promoting yourself, cultivate Christlike character, and He will take care of the rest.
4. Let God defend you—and don’t grow bitter
In a competitive world, it’s easy to feel the need to prove yourself or fight for what you think you deserve. But God is your defender. He sees your struggles, your effort, and your faithfulness. Even if others ignore or misunderstand you, God stands behind you. There’s no need to fight for recognition. Keep moving forward, keep serving, and He will speak for you at the right time.
5. Don’t boast about yourself
Self-praise reflects insecurity. True confidence rests in God, not in human approval. Paul is clear: the glory belongs to the Lord, because everything good we have, everything we are, and everything we accomplish comes from Him. Don’t promote yourself—let your life exalt Christ.
“As the Scriptures say, ‘If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.’ When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.”
2 Corinthians 10:17–18 (NLT)
Think About It:
- Are you seeking human validation or allowing God to speak on your behalf?
- Do your character and actions reflect Christ more than your words?
- Are you willing to wait for God to commend you instead of exalting yourself?
