Before and Now

Before and Now

“Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.”
1 Peter 2:25 (NLT)

Peter speaks to a community of believers, reminding them of their spiritual transformation. Before knowing Christ, they were like lost sheep—without direction, without protection, without purpose. But now, having returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of their souls, they have found identity, care, and destiny. This truth also applies to you and me. There is a “before” and an “after.” And the difference does not lie in what we did, but in who our Shepherd now is: Jesus Christ.
1. Wandering Sheep
“Once you were like sheep who wandered away.”
1 Peter 2:25 (NLT)
A sheep without a shepherd is vulnerable.
• It has no protection from danger.
• It has no constant provision of food.
• It lives in scarcity and neglect.
• It is exposed to falls, wounds, and attacks.
• It has no identity, because no one claims it as their own.
This is how we were before knowing Christ. We walked through life without direction, seeking love, meaning, and security in places that couldn’t give our soul what it truly needed. We were vulnerable to all kinds of deception, anxiety, and destruction. We lived without aim, without guidance, not knowing to whom we belonged.
2. Sheep with a Shepherd
“But now you have turned to your Shepherd…”
1 Peter 2:25 (NLT)
The good news is that we’ve returned home. Christ not only found us—He restored us and received us as His own.
• Now we receive spiritual nourishment for the soul.
• We are cared for, strengthened, and gently guided.
• We receive the attention of the best Shepherd there is.
• Our wounded hearts begin to heal, our minds find peace, and our lives regain meaning.
Returning to the Shepherd doesn’t mean life becomes perfect, but it does mean we no longer walk alone. We live accompanied, sustained, and led by the One who gave His life for us. This is the best decision we’ve ever made: to return to the heart of Christ.
3. Protected Sheep
“…the Guardian of your souls.”
1 Peter 2:25 (NLT)
We don’t just have a Shepherd—we have a Guardian. Jesus watches over, protects, covers, and defends our lives.
• When fear comes, He is our refuge.
• When spiritual attacks arise, He covers us.
• When there is confusion, He gives us direction.
• When we stumble, He lifts us up with grace.
The world remains uncertain, but our souls are kept in the safest place: in Christ. He doesn’t sleep, He doesn’t get distracted, and He never abandons. His faithfulness doesn’t depend on our behavior, but on His eternal love.

“Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.”
1 Peter 2:25 (NLT)

Think About It:

  1. Do you remember what your life was like before returning to Christ?
  2. Are you living as a sheep under His care, or have you wandered away from the Shepherd again?
  3. Are you thankful for the protection, provision, and direction you now have in Jesus?
