Reminder
“Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence! No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave.”
Psalm 89:47–48 (NLT)
The psalmist interrupts his prayer to express an eternal truth: life is short, fragile, and fleeting—and without God, completely empty. In the midst of anxiety, suffering, or daily busyness, we need to pause and reflect on what truly matters. This passage is a divine reminder of our human condition, our destiny, and our need for eternal purpose.
1. Remember How Short My Life Is
“Remember how short my life is…”
Psalm 89:47 (NLT)
Anxiety, problems, and conflicts lose their grip when we remember how brief life really is.
• No difficulty lasts forever.
• No wound will remain forever.
• No earthly achievement is ultimate.
This reminder brings wisdom. It helps us live with focus. It invites us to prioritize the eternal over the urgent.
I must be aware of this when I feel overwhelmed or discouraged: this life is brief, but it can be meaningful if lived for God.
2. How Empty and Futile Human Life Is!
“How empty and futile this human existence!”
Psalm 89:47 (NLT)
Life without purpose is a meaningless routine.
• Work, sleep, eat, repeat… is not enough.
• Accumulating things, chasing pleasure, achieving success… doesn’t satisfy.
Life without God is empty because it was never designed to be lived apart from the Creator.
• Only in Him do we find purpose.
• Only in Him is there true satisfaction.
• Only in Him does life have direction.
Without God, life is a race with no finish line. With Him, every step has meaning.
3. No One Can Live Forever; All Will Die
“No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave.”
Psalm 89:48 (NLT)
These questions are striking. They remind us of a truth many avoid: we will all die.
• It doesn’t matter how healthy, wealthy, or powerful we are.
• No one can avoid death.
But there is hope for those who believe:
Christ conquered death.
He rose again and promised eternal life to those who follow Him.
• The body dies, but the soul lives on.
• This life ends, but real life begins with Him.
Without Christ, the grave is the end.
With Christ, the grave is only the doorway to glory.
“Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence! No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave.”
Psalm 89:47–48 (NLT)
Think About It:
- Are you living with the awareness that life is short?
- Have you tried to fill your life with things that cannot give you true purpose?
- Are you ready for the day your earthly life ends, or do you need to reconcile with God today?
