Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love.
2 John 1:3 (NLT)
In this brief yet profound verse, the apostle John reveals a heavenly formula that transforms our hearts: grace plus mercy produces peace. This peace is not shallow or temporary; it is a peace that remains with us when we live in truth and love. Understanding how God’s grace and mercy work together is key to experiencing a life in harmony with God and with others.
- Grace: receiving what I don’t deserve
Grace is God’s unmerited favor. We didn’t earn it, we didn’t deserve it, but He gave it to us.
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.”
Ephesians 2:8 (NLT)
By grace we are saved, by grace we receive love, forgiveness, and a new life. It is the gift that opened the door to our restoration. - Mercy: not receiving the punishment I do deserve
If grace is the undeserved gift, mercy is the undeserved withholding of punishment.
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”
Romans 3:23 (NLT)
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (NLT)
God, in His mercy, chose to forgive us instead of condemning us. He didn’t close His arms but embraced us with compassion. - Peace: the result of grace + mercy
When I understand that God has given me grace and has shown me mercy, I can rest in His peace.
o Peace with God: no more guilt, no more condemnation.
o Peace with others: if I have been forgiven, I can also forgive.
o Inner peace: anxiety fades when the heart rests in God’s perfect love.
“Grace, mercy, and peace… will continue to be with us.”
This is not momentary peace—it is lasting peace, because it comes from the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ (Isaiah 9:6).
Grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love.
2 John 1:3 (NLT)
Think About It:
• Am I living with gratitude for the grace God has given me?
• Do I recognize God’s mercy as the reason I am standing today?
• Am I experiencing and sharing the peace that comes from living under grace and mercy?
