Authority
After all this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth grew bright with his splendor.
Revelation 18:1 (NLT)
The word authority reminds us that there is a legitimate power to establish and carry out what is commanded. In John’s vision, the angel descends with authority that comes from God Himself, and his very presence illuminates the earth. But Jesus has also delegated authority to His children on earth to live and act in His name. This authority is not human, but heavenly, and it has a clear purpose: to extend the Kingdom of God.
- Authority comes from God
Just as the angel came with authority delegated from heaven, all legitimate authority in the spiritual realm comes from God. We do not act in our own name, but in the name of Jesus Christ, who has all power in heaven and on earth. - Authority to heal and deliver
Jesus gave us authority to pray for the sick and see them healed, and to cast out demons in His name (Mark 16:15–18). This is not an optional ability but part of the church’s mandate. - Authority to preach and baptize
The mission to preach the Good News and baptize those who believe is not only a privilege but a responsibility backed by heaven. Every time we share the gospel, we exercise the authority Christ has entrusted to us. - Authority to proclaim the Kingdom
Just as the disciples were sent by Jesus (Luke 9:1–2), we too have received authority to proclaim the Kingdom of God. This means that our words and actions carry spiritual weight when they align with the Lord’s will. - Authority must be exercised with responsibility
Authority is not a reason for pride or a power to impose, but a sacred assignment to serve and manifest the glory of God. We must ask ourselves: are we exercising this authority with faith, obedience, and love?
The Lord has entrusted us with real spiritual authority. It is not symbolic, nor is it to be kept, but to be used in faith, under His direction, to see His Kingdom expand through us.
After all this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth grew bright with his splendor.
Revelation 18:1 (NLT)
Think About It:
- Are you using the authority Christ gave you to pray, heal, and proclaim the gospel?
- Are there areas in your life where you have not exercised your spiritual authority because of fear or passivity?
- How can you align your faith and actions to exercise this authority correctly, in obedience and love?
