Controlled
After washing his face, he came back out, keeping himself under control. Then he ordered, “Bring out the food.”
Genesis 43:31 (NLT)
Joseph, as governor of Egypt, had to face a moment filled with emotions when he saw his brothers after many years. However, before making decisions, he stepped away, washed his face, and returned in control. This teaches us that a true leader is not defined by controlling others but by mastering himself. Self-control is not weakness; it is strength. It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit that keeps us from error and guides us to act with wisdom.
- Self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us that the Spirit produces in us love, peace, patience, and self-control. It is not something we achieve on our own but evidence that we are walking in the Spirit. - Self-control helps me make clear decisions
Impulsiveness can lead us to mistakes, but when I pause, breathe, and seek God’s guidance, my decisions are wiser and more stable. - Self-control protects me from sin
Many downfalls happen because we act without thinking. Self-control is like a brake that keeps me from sinning with words, thoughts, or actions. - Self-control blesses others
When I control my emotions and my words, I protect those around me. A home, ministry, or team led with self-control becomes a place of peace rather than conflict. - Self-control spares me from regrets
Proverbs 29:11 teaches that a fool gives full vent to his anger, but the wise bring calm in the end. Often a word spoken in anger leaves wounds. With self-control, I avoid destroying and instead build up.
Joseph shows us that it is valid to cry and express emotions, but in the right time and place. True character is demonstrated when we learn to control our reactions and allow the Holy Spirit to govern our actions.
After washing his face, he came back out, keeping himself under control. Then he ordered, “Bring out the food.”

Think About It:
- In what areas of your life do you need to practice more self-control?
- How can you invite the Holy Spirit to help you control your emotions and words?
- What benefits will come to your home, your work, and your church if you practice self-control every day?
