They Wanted to Trap Him
“They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him.”
Luke 11:54 (NLT)
The Pharisees tried to entangle Jesus with their questions, hoping to find a flaw in His words to accuse Him. Yet they never succeeded, because He always answered with wisdom, prudence, and truth. This passage teaches us the power of speaking with clarity and how our words can be used for good or for harm.
- Guard your words
Talking too much can lead us into mistakes. The Bible warns that in the multitude of words, sin is not lacking (Proverbs 10:19). We must be careful with what we say, making sure our words are clear and edifying. - Recognize the enemy’s traps
Just as the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus, the enemy will attempt to provoke us into speaking negatively so he can use it against us. Recognizing these traps will help us avoid falling into them. - Speak what God says about you
When we choose to declare what God’s Word says over our lives, we align ourselves with His truth. Declaring blessing instead of curse changes our perspective and our environment. - Use your words as instruments of blessing
The tongue can be a destructive weapon or a channel of life. We can choose to use our mouths to declare health, prosperity, emotional stability, and firmness in faith. In doing so, our words bring life to those around us. - Live under God’s provision and grace
Let us remember that God opens the windows of heaven to bless us abundantly (Malachi 3:10). When we confess this with faith, we affirm that we live under His favor, grace, and care.
Jesus gave us the example of speaking with prudence, wisdom, and truth. Let us follow His example and decide today that our mouths will be instruments of blessing, not stumbling.

Think About It:
- In what moments do you tend to speak more than necessary, and how can you practice prudence?
- What negative words have you allowed the enemy to use against you, and how can you replace them with declarations of faith?
- In what practical way can you use your words today to be a blessing to your family, friends, or church?
