Self-Control
A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.
Proverbs 25:28 (NLT)
The book of Proverbs offers us practical wisdom for daily life. In this passage, God shows us a clear and powerful image: a city without walls was vulnerable, defenseless, and exposed to constant attack. In the same way, when a person does not govern their emotions, words, and reactions, they are exposed to decisions that can cause harm to their life and to those around them. Self-control is not repression, but discipline guided by the Holy Spirit.
- Self-control guards the heart in times of pressure
When we face difficult moments, self-control allows us to respond with wisdom instead of reacting impulsively. It helps us pause, reflect, and act according to the values of the Kingdom of God. - Self-control restrains toxic emotions
Anger, pride, resentment, or fear can lead us to harmful words and actions. Self-control empowers us to submit these emotions to God before they rule our decisions. - Self-control strengthens relationships
A lack of personal discipline can destroy marriages, friendships, businesses, and ministries. In contrast, self-control enriches relationships, fosters respect, and builds long-term trust. - Self-control improves our communication
In intense discussions, self-control helps us moderate our tone of voice and remember that not only what we say matters, but how we say it. This makes us better communicators and peacemakers. - Self-control brings us closer to our goals
Those who learn to say “no” to momentary impulses can say “yes” to greater purposes. Self-control helps us persevere, stay focused, and move steadily toward the goals God has placed before us.
Self-control is not an isolated human ability, but a work of the Holy Spirit within us. As we surrender our emotions and reactions to Him, He builds strong walls that protect our lives and allow us to reflect the character of Christ at all times.
A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.

Think About It:
- In what areas of your life do you need to strengthen self-control with the help of the Holy Spirit?
- How would your relationships change if you responded with self-control in moments of tension?
- What practical step can you take today to practice self-control in your words and decisions?
