Tell Me Who You Walk With and I’ll Tell You…
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.
Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV)
This proverb reveals a simple yet decisive truth: the people who surround us deeply influence who we become. Our environment shapes the way we think, the decisions we make, and over time, our destiny. That is why choosing carefully who we walk with is not a minor detail; it is a strategic decision for life.
- Relationships influence our identity
There is no doubt that the groups we associate with affect the way we speak, think, and act. Within these circles, key relationships often emerge, such as friendships, a spouse, business partners, and companions on the journey. - Not all relationships require the same level of closeness
There are people I must interact with because of work or school, even if they do not share my values. With them, I can maintain a respectful and cordial relationship, but not necessarily a deep friendship. - I am called to influence, not to be influenced
In environments I cannot choose, God calls me to be light. This does not mean absorbing negative attitudes, but holding firm convictions and maintaining a clear testimony. - I must wisely choose my closest friendships
My closest relationships should be with wise people who strengthen my faith, encourage my growth, and add value to my life and my purpose. - Investing time wisely protects my future
Applying wisdom to how I use my time is essential. Superficial relationships may take up a limited portion, but the greatest investment of time, energy, and resources should be toward people who walk with God and bring direction and blessing.
God does not call us to isolate ourselves, but to be intentional. Walking with the wise not only makes us more prudent; it also positions us better to fulfill the purpose God has for our lives.
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.
Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV)
Think About It:
- Who are the people who most influence the way I think and make decisions today?
- Am I investing my best time in relationships that draw me closer to or farther from God’s purpose?
- What practical change do I need to make in my relationships to walk with greater wisdom?
