Control Your Tongue

Control Your Tongue

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise. Proverbs 10:19

As believers, we must understand that our words have a determining power in our spiritual life and in our testimony before the world. The book of Proverbs frequently warns us about the danger of wordiness, pointing out that the quantity of words is often in direct proportion to the probability of falling into error. Wisdom is not manifested in always speaking, but in having the self-control necessary to discern when silence is more productive than speech. Controlling our tongue is an exercise in maturity that protects our soul and our relationships from unnecessary offenses.

Our tongue can be an instrument to bless or a fire that destroys everything in its path. Asking God to set a guard over our lips is a prayer of humility that recognizes our human weakness. The challenge each day is to allow our communication to be seasoned with grace, understanding that every word we omit out of prudence is a victory over our flesh. True freedom does not consist in saying everything we think, but in having the spiritual strength to say only that which glorifies God.

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise. Proverbs 10:19
