Ask in Faith, Without Doubting
But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. James 1:6-7 NLT
In our Christian walk, we often approach God with requests born of a real need, but with a heart that still clings to human logic or fear. James warns us that prayer is not an exercise of chance, but an act of absolute trust in the character of our heavenly Father. Doubt is not simply a lack of information, but a lack of focus that prevents us from receiving what God has prepared for us.
- Faith centered exclusively on God Our trust should not be placed in our abilities, in the resources of others, or in the probability of something happening. The faith that pleases God is that which recognizes that He is the only source of every good gift and that His power has no limits.
- The danger of divided loyalty Doubting is like trying to walk in two directions at the same time. When we ask for something but keep a backup plan in case God does not respond, we show that our heart is not fully surrendered to His will or His sovereignty.
- The instability of the one who doubts James compares the one who doubts to the waves of the sea, which have no fixed course and depend entirely on the wind. Without a firm faith, our emotions and convictions will fluctuate according to the news we receive or the problems we face each day.
- The barrier that prevents receiving The Bible is clear in saying that whoever doubts should not expect to receive anything. This is not an arbitrary punishment, but a natural consequence: if we do not trust the hand that provides, it will be difficult for us to extend our own to take what is offered to us by grace.
Let us approach the throne of grace today with the assurance that God hears and answers. Let us ask with the conviction that He is faithful to His Word and that, even though the outlook may seem uncertain, His love and His care remain immovable. Let us cast aside all double-mindedness and allow the peace of Christ to be the anchor that holds our soul while we wait with patience and faith for His perfect answer.
But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. James 1:6-7 NLT
Think About It:
- Is there any request in my life that I am making with a “plan B” in case God does not act?
- What truths about the character of God (His love, His power, His wisdom) can help me eliminate doubt today?
- Identify an area of your life where you feel “unstable as a wave” and surrender that fear to the Lord in a prayer of total faith.
