Do not stay halfway

Do not stay halfway

“All right, go ahead,” Pharaoh replied. “I will let you go into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God. But don’t go too far away. Now hurry and pray for me.” Exodus 8:28 NLT

In this passage from the book of Exodus, we find ourselves in the middle of the plagues that struck Egypt. Pharaoh, feeling cornered by the power of God, begins to negotiate with Moses. His intention is not to truly free the people from his heart, but to give up the bare minimum necessary to alleviate his own suffering. The phrase “don’t go too far away” reveals the enemy’s strategy: to allow us to seek God, as long as we do not completely abandon the ground of our former slavery. Many Christians today live on that dangerous border, close enough to God to be religious, but close enough to “Egypt” to be vulnerable to sin.

True Christian freedom begins when we understand that there is no middle ground in the Kingdom of God. Either we are completely free, or we remain slaves due to the proximity of our ties. Do not let the enemy’s negotiations stop you in a place where you can still hear the noises of your past. Walk the necessary distance, cross your wilderness with faith, and separate yourself from everything that prevents you from worshiping the Lord with integrity. God does not want a Sunday visit to the borders of His grace; He wants you to dwell permanently in the center of His will, far from the influence of what once caused you to suffer.

“All right, go ahead,” Pharaoh replied. “I will let you go into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God. But don’t go too far away. Now hurry and pray for me.” Exodus 8:28 NLT

Think About It:

  1. What areas of my current life are still too close to my personal “Egypt”?
  2. Have I been trying to negotiate an obedience with God that does not cost me the sacrifice of my comforts?
  3. Make a list of three habits or situations that act as “anchors” to the past and commit today to cutting them off to move toward your total freedom.
