Serving is Greatness
But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. Matthew 20:26-27
In the kingdom of heaven, the laws of human logic are radically inverted. While the world measures greatness by the number of people who are at our service, the Lord Jesus establishes that true importance is measured by how many people we serve ourselves. As a church, we must be careful not to import secular leadership models where prestige, title, and control are sought. Christ’s call is a call to the towel and the basin; it is an invitation to find our greatest dignity in the humblest acts of service, recognizing that spiritual authority is not imposed from above, but earned from below.
- The contrast with the world’s model Jesus is emphatic in saying “among you it will be different.” The world uses power to dominate and highlight the ego, but in the community of faith, power is used to lift others up. The difference of the Christian must be evident in their lack of selfish ambition and in their constant willingness to help.
- The identity of the leader as a servant For God, leadership is not a status, but a function of service. He who desires to influence the lives of others must be willing to meet the needs of others first. A heart that does not serve is not fit to lead, for only through service is the heart of people and the character of Christ understood.
- The total surrender of the “slave” The mention of becoming a “slave” points to an absolute surrender out of love. It is not about forced servitude, but a voluntary decision to surrender our rights to bless our neighbor. This attitude frees us from pride and allows us to love without expecting anything in return, reflecting the freedom that is found only in obedience to God.
- Greatness according to the measure of Christ Jesus not only taught this principle, but He lived it. Being the King of Kings, He did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life. Our greatness as believers is directly linked to how much we resemble Him in His humility. Every act of selfless service is a seed of eternal glory that the Father values above any human achievement.
True spiritual stature is reached on one’s knees, serving the brothers and the community. Do not seek places of honor or the recognition of men; seek opportunities to be useful where no one else wants to be. By becoming a servant of all, you are occupying the highest place in the heart of God. May our daily longing not be to be served, but to find creative and loving ways to reflect the love of Jesus through our actions. Remember that the greatness that remains is not that which stays with us, but that which we give to others for the sake of Christ’s name.
But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. Matthew 20:26-27
Think About It:
- Is your motivation for serving in the church or in your home to receive recognition or to truly ease the burden of others?
- What humble task have you been avoiding because you feel it is “below” your position or ability?
- Identify an opportunity for anonymous service this week where you can bless someone without that person knowing it was you.
