Breaking the Chains of Lukewarmness
But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! Revelation 3:16 NLT
Spiritual lukewarmness is one of the most dangerous states a believer can find themselves in because it is a state of self-deception. Unlike the “cold,” who recognizes their need for God, or the “hot,” who burns with passion for Him, the lukewarm person believes they are fine because they comply with certain external rites, but their heart has lost the fire of real devotion. It is a comfortable faith that does not bother sin nor hinder the world, but it is offensive to the Lord. Breaking these chains demands brutal honesty in front of the mirror of the Word and a repentant return to intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
- The danger of spiritual self-sufficiency Lukewarmness is usually born when we begin to trust in our own blessings or achievements. We believe that we “have no need of anything” and stop depending on God in the everyday. This self-sufficiency extinguishes spiritual hunger and makes us conformists, distancing us from the urgency of seeking His presence every morning.
- A faith without real commitment The lukewarm person wants the benefits of salvation but avoids the cost of discipleship. They seek a religion made to their measure, which does not demand sacrifices, changes in their character, or a total surrender of their will. However, a faith that does not transform daily life and personal priorities is simply an empty shell that has no power to sustain us in trials.
- Loss of sensitivity to sin When the spiritual fire goes out, the conscience becomes seared. Things that used to hurt us or distance us from God are now allowed under the excuse of “tolerance” or “freedom.” Lukewarmness makes us blind to our own condition of spiritual nakedness, making us ignore that we desperately need divine eye salve to see clearly again.
- The call to fervent repentance God does not confront us to reject us, but to wake us up. The remedy for lukewarmness is fire: the fire of trial that purifies and the fire of the Spirit that revives. We must be zealous and repent, opening the door to Jesus not as an occasional guest, but as the absolute Lord of every corner of our existence.
We cannot continue walking in the gray zone of indecision. God seeks a total surrender, a heart that burns for His cause and that does not settle for the crumbs of a superficial spirituality. Lukewarmness is an invisible chain that ties us to mediocrity and prevents us from reaching the fullness of what God has for us. Today is the day to ask the Lord to blow upon the embers of our heart and ignite a flame that nothing can put out. It is preferable to face the Father’s discipline than to remain in the indifference that distances us from His presence.

Think About It:
- What activities or distractions have been occupying the place that belongs to your devotion to God?
- Evaluate your prayer life this past week: does it reflect the passion of someone who burns for God or the routine of someone who complies out of commitment?
- Identify a radical decision you must take today to show the Lord that He is your absolute priority above your comfort.
