A Burning Fire in My Bones
«But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!» Jeremiah 20:9 NLT
The prophet Jeremiah lived in an extremely difficult time, marked by Israel’s rebellion and constant rejection of the divine message. Proclaiming God’s truth brought him persecution, mockery, and deep loneliness, to the point of feeling the human desire to remain silent and never speak in the Name of the Lord again. However, Jeremiah discovered that when the Word of God has taken root in the deepest part of one’s being, it is impossible to silence it. This experience of the prophet teaches us how God’s call and the power of His Spirit prevail above weariness, discouragement, and surrounding pressures.
- The temptation to yield to discouragement: In the face of rejection, opposition, or the indifference of others, it is natural to experience moments of weakness and feel inclined to remain silent to avoid conflict.
- The living nature of God’s Word: The Lord’s message is not a human theory, but a spiritual fire that transforms the believer’s inner self and consumes any attempt at passivity.
- The impossibility of containing the truth: When the Holy Spirit fills a life, the desire to proclaim the wonders of the Creator overcomes any personal resistance or human fear.
- The passion that overcomes difficulties: Holy zeal for the work of God grants the firmness and courage needed to maintain faithfulness even when circumstances are adverse.
- The constant renewal of the call: Recognizing our fragility impels us to surrender to the Lord, letting His power—and not our own strength—sustain our spiritual work.
Dear church, let us not allow difficulties or rejection to extinguish our passion for sharing the truth of Christ. If today you feel weariness or discouragement in your service to the Lord, allow His Word to rekindle your heart. The same fire that sustained Jeremiah is available to strengthen you and give you the courage to continue proclaiming His love and justice to those around you.
