Recognizing that the Lord is always righteous

Then the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is right in doing this to us!” 2 Chronicles 12:6 NLT

Church, we often find vital lessons in the Scriptures disguised as moments of deep crisis. In this passage, King Rehoboam and the people of Judah had reached a stage of strength and stability. However, in the midst of their comfort, they made the tragic mistake of abandoning the law of the Lord. As a result of their unfaithfulness, God allowed King Shishak of Egypt to invade the land to bring correction. When the prophet Shemaiah confronted them with the truth, revealing that God had handed them over to enemy hands because of their rebellion, the reaction of the leaders made the difference between total destruction and mercy. They did not rebel or justify themselves; they humbled themselves and declared that God was right. This episode confronts us directly and teaches us how we should respond when the discipline of the Lord comes into our lives to straighten our steps.

• The danger of forgetting God in prosperity When Rehoboam’s kingdom was consolidated and felt secure, he and all the people stopped seeking the Lord. It is extremely easy to cry out to God in the midst of pain and scarcity, but the true test of our faithfulness is revealed when everything goes well. Prosperity and peace should never become an excuse to become independent from our Creator, for everything we have comes from His grace.
• Divine discipline always has a purpose The attack of the enemy army was not an accident, but a consequence permitted by God to awaken the conscience of His people. Often, when we voluntarily turn away from the Father’s will, He allows us to face the weight of our own decisions. His discipline does not seek to destroy us, but to correct us out of love, to bring us back to the fold before we get completely lost.
• True humiliation does not seek excuses Upon hearing the prophet’s rebuke, the leaders and the king did not try to justify themselves, nor did they blame circumstances, nor complain that the punishment was too severe. They simply humbled themselves. Genuine repentance begins right there: when we stop defending ourselves, let go of pride, and take total responsibility for our failures before the throne of grace.
• Declaring God’s righteousness in the midst of the trial Affirming that “the Lord is right” while experiencing the painful consequences of our own mistakes requires deep spiritual maturity. It is recognizing that God is never arbitrary or unjust in His dealings with us. He is holy, righteous, and perfect. Accepting His righteousness, even when it hurts, is the first step toward submitting our will to His lordship.
• A contrite heart moves heavenly mercy Scripture reveals to us that, seeing the sincere humiliation of the king and the leaders, God stopped the absolute destruction of Jerusalem and granted them relief. Our Father is slow to anger and abounding in mercy. Whenever we decide to abandon pride and surrender unconditionally before His righteousness, He opens a door of grace and gives us the opportunity to be restored.

Beloved church, none of us is immune to making wrong decisions or growing spiritually cold when things are going well. But what is truly decisive is how we react when the Holy Spirit confronts us. If you are going through a difficult time because of decisions far from God’s will, do not harden your heart or fill yourself with resentment. Do not look for people to blame or try to justify the unjustifiable. Dare to bend your knees, recognize your mistakes, and declare with total honesty that the Lord is right. When we choose the path of true humility, the Father’s loving arms will always be ready to lift us up, forgive us, and give us a new beginning sustained by His immense faithfulness.

1. Have you allowed stability, comfort, or success to pull you away from your daily and intimate search for God?
2. When you face the consequences of your mistakes, do you tend to justify yourself and look for people to blame, or do you humble yourself and recognize the Lord’s righteousness?
3. Take a moment today to examine your heart; if there is any area where you have turned away from obedience, sincerely repent and surrender to the restoring mercy of God.
