In You Our Eyes Are Fixed
“O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
2 Chronicles 20:12 NKJV
King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah suddenly found themselves surrounded by a threatening alliance of nations ready to destroy them. Realizing that their own human resources and strategies were completely insufficient given the magnitude of the danger, Jehoshaphat did not resort to despair or panic, but called all the people together to seek the presence of God. In this passage, we see the transparency and humility of a leader who openly acknowledges his limitations before the Lord, teaching us how to respond when the storms of life exceed our strength.
- Sincerely recognize our weakness Jehoshaphat’s prayer begins with a sincere declaration: they did not have the necessary strength to deal with the problem. Pride pushes us to pretend self-sufficiency, but spiritual growth begins when we humbly accept before God that we cannot do it alone.
- Admit the lack of human answers The expression “nor do we know what to do” demonstrates a total surrender of control. Instead of improvising desperate solutions based on our own wisdom, it is necessary to pause, let go of the reins, and allow the guidance of the Holy Spirit to direct our steps.
- Fix our eyes on the Lord When circumstances overwhelm us, the direction of our eyes determines the peace of our heart. Jehoshaphat turned his gaze away from the size of the enemy army and directed it toward the majesty of the Almighty, remembering that victory always depends on His sovereignty.
- Place an active hope in God Placing hope in God does not mean sitting idly by with resignation, but trusting fully that He will defend His people. It is the firm conviction that, even if the outlook is uncertain, the faithfulness of the Lord remains immovable.
When trials exceed the capacity of our strength and answers seem scarce, the path of faith invites us to absolute surrender. We are not called to resolve every crisis in our own abilities, but to rest in the power of Him who fights our battles. By surrendering control and keeping our eyes fixed on the Lord, we discover that our weakness is the stage where divine grace manifests its glory and its peace.
