The Lord Can Give You Much More Than This
Amaziah asked the man of God, “But what about all that silver I paid to hire the army of Israel?” The man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this!”
2 Chronicles 25:9 NLT
King Amaziah of Judah made the hasty decision to hire one hundred thousand mercenary soldiers from the northern kingdom to reinforce his troops before going into battle. However, when a man of God warned him that he should not rely on that army because the Lord was not with them, Amaziah faced a great financial and personal dilemma. The king’s main concern was not the will of God, but the fear of losing the huge financial investment he had already handed over. The prophet’s answer shifted Amaziah’s focus away from his earthly losses to direct it toward the abundance and sovereignty of the Lord, showing us the value of obedience over attachment to material things.
- The danger of calculating obedience in terms of earthly cost Amaziah’s first reaction to God’s command was to evaluate what he was going to lose monetarily instead of valuing divine backing. Many times we hesitate to obey the Word of God because we focus on the price, the effort, or the resources we think we will let go of by making the right decision.
- The sufficiency of God’s power and riches The prophet’s message reminded the king that the Lord is the owner of all things and has no limits to bless. No loss suffered for being faithful to God remains uncompensated, since He has the power to restore and multiply much more than what we are called to let go.
- The value of letting go of wrong alliances and investments Amaziah had to be willing to lose a large sum of silver in order to align himself with God’s purpose. Obedience often demands breaking commitments, projects, or attitudes that seem advantageous humanly speaking, but deprive us of the Lord’s presence and blessing.
- Faith as a decision that overcomes fear of the future To dismiss the hired troops and let them go, Amaziah had to trust that victory depended on the Lord and not on the multitude of his soldiers. Authentic faith is demonstrated when we act in obedience despite apparent risk or uncertainty.
Learning to trust that the Lord can give us much more than what we fear losing is crucial for our spiritual growth. When we place God’s commandments above our personal gains or human plans, we discover that nothing we surrender for the sake of faith is ever lost. The true wealth of the believer’s life is not measured by what we hold on to with our own strength, but by the inexhaustible backing and abiding grace we receive when walking in total integrity before our heavenly Father.
