Stay Alert and Focused on Your Purpose
So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him! Mark 13:35-37 NLT
In chapter 13 of the Gospel of Mark, Jesus instructs His disciples about the signs of the end times and the imminent reality of His return. The Master clearly warns them that complex seasons will come, marked by rumors of war, deceptions, crises, and challenges in the social and family environment. However, in the midst of all these circumstances, Christ’s call for His church is not to live terrified or paralyzed by fear, but to remain awake, sober, and working faithfully in the task that has been entrusted to each of us. We cannot neglect our spiritual stewardship or allow ourselves to be dragged away by the indifference or comfort of this world.
- Live with a sense of urgency The present time is brief, and we cannot afford the luxury of postponing our obedience or our spiritual growth. Living awake means managing each day with diligence, recognizing that the return of the Lord is near and that we must make the most of every opportunity to serve God and enrich the lives of those around us.
- Care for the state of our heart at all times Jesus mentioned four times of keeping watch: evening, midnight, before dawn, and daybreak. In the evening, we must be careful not to let the weariness of the day weaken our consecration; at midnight, we must resist the darkness and the temptation of sin; before dawn, it is vital to rise and seek the presence of the Lord in quietness before the daily noise begins; and at daybreak, we must align our thoughts to go out and honor God with excellence.
- Faithfully fulfill the assigned task The Lord has left us as managers of His household, and He has delegated a specific task to each of us. Staying alert does not mean sitting idly with our arms crossed looking at the sky, but persevering with discipline in ministerial work, caring for our marriage, spiritually shaping our children, and winning souls for the Kingdom with passion and dedication.
- Reject spiritual slumber The enemy will try to numb our faith through distractions, blind materialism, excessive entertainment, and the craving for fleeting riches. We must shake off laziness, indifference, and complacency, keeping the fire of the Holy Spirit burning within us through daily prayer and constant meditation on the Word of God.
Do not allow the worries of this society or the false comfort of your surroundings to extinguish your passion for Christ and find you spiritually asleep. Evaluate your priorities today, shake off discouragement, and renew your commitment to live a life of holiness, service, and integrity before God. When you stay awake and focused on the eternal purpose for which you were born, your life becomes a steady light of testimony, and you will be ready, confident, and victorious to present yourself before the Lord on the day of His coming.
Think About It:
- What everyday distractions or anxieties have been trying to numb your life of prayer and devotion to the Lord?
- How are you fulfilling today the responsibility and the gifts that God has entrusted to you in your home and in the church?
- Set aside a moment today to evaluate your priorities and ask the Holy Spirit to renew your vigilance and spiritual passion.
