You did not honor the God who gives you the breath of life
For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny! Daniel 5:23 NLT
Sometimes, when we reach certain positions of comfort or success, we run the great risk of forgetting who is truly the master of our destiny. This passage relates the harsh reprimand to King Belshazzar, who, blinded by power and pride, decided to ignore and defy the Creator, putting his trust in material things and false gods. Through the Restoration Workshop and the study of His Word, we must learn to return to honoring God with all our heart, remembering at every moment that our existence is not governed by chance, but by the hand of the Almighty.
- Our life is not in the hands of institutions It is very easy to fall into the deception of believing that our future or security depends on a bank, the global economy, or the decisions of politicians. However, no earthly institution has ultimate control over our destiny.
- Our employer is only a means, not the source We can come to think that our life and our financial provision are completely in the hands of our employer. It is vital to understand that our job is merely a channel or a means that God uses, but He remains our true and only inexhaustible source.
- Our life is not in the hands of other human beings Sometimes we put our trust in science, thinking that our life is in the hands of doctors, or we seek absolute security in our friends. Although God uses people to bless and heal us, our existence does not depend on them.
- Our life is only in the hands of God The absolute reality that we must embrace every day is that our life is only in the hands of God. He is the one who gives us the breath of life, the only one who truly guides all our steps and who is in control of our destiny.
- The need to renounce pride When we lose sight of these truths, we become proud and stop honoring God, just as that ancient king did. We must ask the Lord to free us from pride so that we never forget who He is in our life.
Recognizing our complete dependence on the Lord frees us from living under the stress and anxiety that this world tries to impose on us. When we live with a humble and grateful heart, we have no need to place our hope in temporary refuges. Surrendering control to our Heavenly Father is an act of yielding, through which we tell Him that He is our everything. Let us make sure to honor Him daily, rendering Him worship and praise, knowing with certainty that in His hands we are completely secure.
