Gifts to Serve and Bless Others
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT
As we study chapters 12 through 14 of 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul teaches the church about the true purpose of spiritual gifts, their operation, and living together in the body of Christ. In the midst of a congregation where many sought to stand out or show off their spiritual abilities, the Word grounds us with maturity and order: no talent or gift was given by God to feed the personal ego, but to build up others. The apostle links the manifestation of the Spirit in chapter 12 with the most excellent way of love in chapter 13 and constructive order in chapter 14. This teaching shows us that life in the body of Christ is not about competing or seeking the spotlight, but about complementing and enriching the lives of those around us through an attitude of service.
- Gifts have the purpose of blessing others God does not distribute spiritual abilities for selfish benefit or to inflate anyone’s reputation. Every gift that the Holy Spirit gives to a believer is intended for practical service toward the spiritual family and the community. When we use what we have to enrich people, the church flourishes and grows stronger.
- We are all necessary in the body of Christ In God’s design, there are no insignificant members. Just as in the human body the eye cannot reject the hand nor the head do without the feet, in the church every believer fulfills a unique assignment. Those who seem weaker are often the most necessary, which is why we must protect our unity and value one another mutually.
- Love is the engine that gives value to everything we do We can preach with eloquence, have faith to move mountains, or give our goods to the needy, but if we do not truly love, none of that has value before God. Love is patient, kind, does not seek its own, nor does it hold a grudge. Every gift or talent only transcends when it is exercised motivated by genuine love.
- Maturity seeks collective edification and order In the house of God, the priority must be for people to understand, learn, and be affirmed in their faith. We must be mature in our way of thinking and seek that our words and actions bring edification, encouragement, and comfort to others, always striving for excellence and order in everything we undertake.
Greatness in the kingdom of God is never measured by the notoriety of our talents, but by our humble willingness to serve and love. When we decide to abandon personal competitions and place who we are in the hands of the Lord to bless the church, we become instruments of transformation and life that leave a lasting legacy.
