Let Go to Move Forward
Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on.
Philippians 3:12 (NKJV)
The apostle Paul, one of the most influential leaders in Christianity, gives us a lesson in humility and focus. Despite all he had accomplished in his walk with Christ, he acknowledges that he has not yet arrived—that he is still in process. He reveals an essential key to spiritual progress: we must let go of the past. Holding on to mistakes, wounds, frustrations, or even past successes can keep us stuck. To grow and reach the goal God has for us, we must learn to let go.
- We have not arrived, but we keep moving forward
Paul reminds us that no one has reached perfection. We are all on the way. Recognizing that is not weakness, but wisdom. Progress begins with the honesty of knowing we still need to grow. - You cannot move forward without letting go of the past
Many people fail to advance because they keep carrying guilt, failures, or traumas. Letting go does not mean ignoring them—it means surrendering them to God. We learn from what we’ve lived, but we do not allow it to define or limit us. - Fix your eyes on what is ahead
Focus is essential. We cannot run a race while looking backward. What God has ahead is greater than what we leave behind. Concentrating on the future God promises gives us direction and hope. - Moving forward requires intention
Paul uses the word “press.” This is not just about desire—it is about discipline. Moving forward involves a daily decision to let go of what hinders and to walk with purpose toward the eternal. - The prize is at the end of the race, not in the past
The goal is to receive the heavenly prize, the reward God has for those who persevere in Christ. There is no crown for those who give up, but there is victory for those who, by God’s grace, keep pressing on.
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV)
Think About It:
• Is there something from the past I have not let go of that is keeping me from moving forward?
• Am I fixing my eyes on what God has ahead, or am I still focused on what is behind?
• What practical step can I take today to draw closer to God’s purpose for my life?
