Persevere: It Is Necessary to Go Through Difficulties
There they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must undergo many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God. Acts 14:22 (NLT)
We often receive the message that the Christian life is a path free of obstacles, but the biblical reality is very different. The apostle Paul, after having been persecuted and stoned, returned to the cities where he had preached to perform a vital task: strengthening and encouraging the new disciples. His message was not a promise of comfort, but a necessary warning. As a church, we must understand that trials are not a sign that God has abandoned us, but an intrinsic part of the maturation process that prepares us for our eternal inheritance. Perseverance is not simply enduring, but moving forward with purpose in the midst of the fire.
- The strengthening of the inner man Difficulties have the purpose of strengthening our spirit. Just as muscles grow under resistance, our faith becomes immovable when we learn to trust God in moments of scarcity or pain. The encouragement we receive from the Word allows us to see beyond the immediate problem and focus on the character that God is forging in us.
- The decision to continue in the faith Apostolic encouragement is a call to continuity. Following Christ is easy when everything is going well, but true faith is demonstrated when we decide not to turn back despite opposition. Continuing implies maintaining our spiritual disciplines, our confession of victory, and our trust in divine promises, even when circumstances seem contradictory.
- The inevitability of afflictions The text tells us that it is “necessary” to go through difficulties. This word eliminates the surprise factor of the trial. If we know that affliction is part of the Kingdom’s curriculum, we will stop asking “why me?” and start asking “what do You want to teach me, Lord?”. Difficulty is the filter that purifies our motivations and makes us dependent on God’s grace.
- The goal that justifies the path All present suffering makes sense when we remember the destination: the Kingdom of God. Difficulties are temporary and light compared to the eternal glory that awaits us. Having a clear goal allows us to suffer with hope, knowing that every battle won is one step closer to the full presence of our King.
Do not be discouraged if today you find yourself in the middle of a storm; remember that the great men and women of the Bible went through the same process. Perseverance is the mark of the true disciple. God has not called you to stay halfway, but to finish the race with honor. Every difficulty you face with faith is an opportunity for God’s power to be perfected in your weakness. Keep your eyes on Jesus, strengthen your knees, and keep moving forward, because the final reward will make every tear and every effort worth it for eternity.

Think About It:
- What current difficulty has made you doubt continuing with the same passion in your service to God?
- In what way have you seen that your past trials have strengthened your character and your trust in the Lord?
- Look today for a brother or sister who is going through a difficult time and encourage them with this truth: the trial is temporary, but the Kingdom is eternal.
