The future glory will be greater than the past
“The future glory of this Temple will be greater than its past glory, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “And in this place I will bring peace. I, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken! Haggai 2:9 NLT
Church, it is very easy to stay anchored in the successes or good times of the past. When the people of Israel returned from exile to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, many of the elders wept when they saw that the foundations of this new house seemed insignificant compared to the majestic temple Solomon had built years before. Discouragement threatened to stop the work. However, God raised up the prophet Haggai with a powerful message to change their perspective. The Lord was not measuring gold or silver, but the divine purpose that would be fulfilled in that place. This passage challenges us to stop comparing our current season with what we experienced yesterday, and invites us to trust that God always has something much greater prepared for our spiritual future.
- Do not despise new beginnings Sometimes we look at our current situation and it seems small or insufficient compared to the victories we experienced before. The people were discouraged by appearances, but God taught them that the great works of the Kingdom often begin with modest foundations. Do not allow nostalgia for the past to rob you of the joy of what God is building today in your life.
- True glory does not lie in material things Solomon’s temple was covered in gold and precious stones, but God declared that the second temple would have a superior glory. This reminds us that the magnitude of a ministry, a family, or a believer is not measured by external resources or visible achievements, but by the weight of God’s presence within. A surrendered and humble heart shines far brighter than any human structure.
- The presence of Christ makes the difference The promise that the future glory would be greater was perfectly fulfilled when Jesus Himself, the Son of God, walked the courts of this second temple centuries later. The physical presence of the Messiah brought a glorious manifestation that no material building could ever contain. When Christ is the center of our lives, we experience the greatest glory possible.
- The Lord guarantees provision and backing By introducing Himself as the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, God was reminding His people that He has absolute control over all the resources of the universe. If He has decreed that your future glory will be greater, He Himself will take care of providing the strength, grace, and means necessary for His promise to become a tangible reality.
- An unwavering promise of peace The closing of this promise is the impartation of true peace. In the midst of a world full of anxiety and scarcity, the presence of God’s glory always produces a peace that surpasses all understanding. This peace is not the mere absence of problems, but the absolute security that God is with us and that our future is secure in His hands.
Beloved church, our God is a God of advancement and eternal purposes. We were not called to live constantly looking through the rearview mirror, regretting what has already passed or believing that our best days are behind us. If today you feel discouraged because your strength seems small or your results look meager, lift up your eyes. The same Lord who encouraged His people to keep building tells you today that the best is yet to come. Let us surrender our expectations to His will, continue building our lives on the foundation of His Word, and prepare ourselves to see how His grace pours out upon us in an unprecedented way. Your future in Christ is bright, and His peace will sustain you every step of the way.

Think About It:
- Is there any past success or previous stage in your life that is keeping you from appreciating and enjoying what God is doing today?
- In evaluating your spiritual growth, are you focusing too much on external appearances instead of cultivating the presence of Jesus in your heart?
- This week, make the decision to hand over to God any discouragement regarding your projects or family, declaring in faith that your best days are in the future He has prepared for you.
