The lack of correction destroys

He shall die for lack of self-control, and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. Proverbs 5:23

As children of God, we must understand that discipline and correction are not arbitrary punishments, but protection mechanisms for our soul. The book of Proverbs severely warns us about the fate of those who choose to live without limits and reject wise counsel. The lack of correction acts like a silent cancer that weakens character and clouds judgment, leading the individual to a state of vulnerability where sin ends up consuming their life. For the Church, accepting instruction is an act of humility that keeps us on the path of life, while contempt for discipline is the fastest route to self-destruction.

  • The loss of self-control The text links spiritual death with a lack of control over impulses. When a person does not submit to correction, their will weakens in the face of temptation. Self-control is a wall built by accepting limits; without it, we are exposed to decisions that can ruin our future and our communion with God.
  • The danger of persistent folly Folly is not intellectual ignorance, but the voluntary rejection of God’s truth. To “go astray in the greatness of his folly” means walking deliberately toward the abyss, believing one is right above eternal principles. Folly makes us deaf to the counsel of the Holy Spirit and of older brothers and sisters in the faith.
  • Correction as preventive medicine No one enjoys discipline in the moment, but its fruits are peace and righteousness. God corrects us because He loves us and desires to spare us the pain of the consequences of sin. Seeing correction as an enemy is a fatal error; we must see it as the loving hand of the Father moving us away from danger before it is too late.
  • The responsibility of accountability Living in community implies allowing others to speak the truth to us. Those who isolate themselves and do not allow anyone to correct them usually end up trapped in their own mistakes. The lack of an accountability system is fertile ground for folly to grow until it becomes uncontrollable.

Life is too short to learn only from our own mistakes; wisdom consists of learning from the instruction of God and others. Do not let pride prevent you from receiving a word of correction, as that word may be the one that saves your marriage, your ministry, or your own life. Surrendering our will to the Lordship of Christ includes accepting His limits with joy. Decide today to be a teachable person, someone who prefers the wound of a faithful friend who corrects over the kisses of an enemy who flatters. By embracing discipline, you are choosing life and ensuring that your steps remain firm on the path of righteousness.

Think About It:

  1. How do you react internally when someone points out a mistake or gives you advice you didn’t ask for?
  2. Is there any habit or attitude in your life that you know God is trying to correct and that you have been ignoring?
  3. Seek out a person mature in the faith today and humbly ask them to tell you honestly in what areas of your character they believe you need to grow.
