Goodness and Mercy Pursue You
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6 NLT
Often we live with the feeling that it is problems, debts, or past mistakes that are chasing us closely. However, King David, who knew the persecution of his enemies firsthand, reveals a superior spiritual perspective to us. For the child of God, the “tracking” is not done by fatality, but by the goodness and unfailing love of the Father. No matter what valley we are walking through, there is a divine escort that does not lose sight of us and has instructions to reach us with blessing in every stage of our existence.
- The certainty of divine goodness The word “surely” leaves no room for doubt. It is not a probability; it is a legal guarantee of the Kingdom. God’s goodness does not depend on whether the day is sunny or stormy; it is an attribute of His character that is assigned in your favor unconditionally.
- A love that does not tire God’s love is described as “unfailing.” Unlike human love that can fluctuate, the Lord’s love is an active force that actively seeks us. When we feel alone, that love is working behind our backs to prepare the way for us.
- The persistence of blessing The original text suggests that goodness and mercy “run after us.” It is a holy pursuit. God is so generous that, even when we try to flee due to fear or discouragement, His grace insists on reaching us to restore us and remind us of our identity.
- The final destination of communion The purpose of goodness following us “all the days” is to lead us to a permanent dwelling in His presence. The Christian life is not about sporadic visits to God, but about consciously dwelling under His roof, enjoying the security that only the Good Shepherd can provide.
Do not walk today looking over your shoulder with fear of the future. Change your expectation: what is coming behind you is not judgment or failure, but the unmerited favor of a God who loves you deeply. If you manage to see with eyes of faith, you will realize that every step you take is being covered by mercy that is renewed every morning. Rest in the assurance that, while you follow the Shepherd, His goodness is in charge of watching your back.

Think About It:
- What negative things have I felt are “pursuing” me lately, and how does my peace change knowing that God’s goodness is what really follows me?
- In what way can I demonstrate today that I trust in the “unfailing love” of the Lord, even in the midst of an uncertain situation?
- Make a list of three moments from this week where God’s goodness reached you in an unexpected way and give Him thanks for His faithfulness.
