Serving Righteousness
“Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.” Romans 6:19
As believers, we must understand that the human heart is never neutral; it is always serving something or someone. The apostle Paul confronts us with the reality of our transformation in Christ. Before knowing the Lord, our will was chained to desires that only produced more degradation and sin. However, the freedom we receive by grace is not to live without direction, but to change masters. Serving righteousness is the daily decision to place our members, talents, and time at the disposal of what is right and holy in the eyes of God. It is moving from a life driven by the flesh to a life governed by the Spirit.
- The inclination of our nature Paul recognizes human weakness. Sin has its own inertia: impurity tends to seek more impurity. If we are not intentional in our surrender to God, old habits will try to reclaim their place. Recognizing our fragility should not lead us to defeat, but to a greater dependence on the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us to overcome.
- The radical change of loyalty The Christian life involves a total exchange of loyalty. The concept of “slavery” here speaks of a complete surrender. Just as we once lived without limits in sin, now we are called to live with the same intensity, but in obedience to God. Our eyes, hands, and decisions now have a different purpose: to glorify the Lord in everything.
- The path toward holiness Holiness does not happen automatically or mystically; it is the result of constant decisions. Every time we choose what is right, we advance in our process of transformation. Righteousness is not only a command, it is the path that God uses to form His character in us day after day.
- Freedom in obedience Although it may seem contradictory, true freedom is found in surrendering to God. Sin promises freedom, but ends up enslaving and destroying. In contrast, obedience to God, although it may seem limited, produces peace, purpose, and eternal life. Serving righteousness frees us from the weight and consequences of sin.
Living for righteousness is one of the greatest privileges we have as children of God. We no longer belong to the past or to the chains of sin; we now live under a new identity in Christ. Every decision we make is an opportunity to reflect His character. It is not just about avoiding evil, but about actively embracing what is good. Allow your life to be evidence of God’s transforming power, surrendering every area of your being to His righteousness.
