Before I formed you, I knew you

Before I formed you, I knew you

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 NLT

Church, today we approach one of the most intimate and revealing passages regarding our identity and purpose in God. When the Lord calls Jeremiah to the prophetic ministry, the young man feels insecure, inexperienced, and overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task. However, God does not respond to his doubts with human strategies, but rather by taking him back to the origin of everything: to eternity itself, before creation. The Father reveals to him that his life is not a biological accident or the product of chance, but an intentional and sovereign design. This message was not exclusive to the prophet; today it resounds powerfully for each one of us. In a world where so many people desperately search for their identity in achievements, external approval, or passing trends, God invites us to discover who we are by looking at ourselves through the lens of His eternal design.

  • The Father’s intimate knowledge before our origin The Lord declares to Jeremiah that He already knew him even before forming him. This means that our existence began in the mind and heart of God long before we were conceived in our mother’s womb. We are not an accident or a surprise to heaven; our life is the manifestation of an eternal thought of love that the Creator had before the foundation of the world.
  • We were formed with divine intention The word “formed” points us to an artist or a potter who carefully shapes the clay with his own hands. God designed every detail of your being: your personality, your talents, and even your limitations. Nothing in you was made by chance. Understanding that we are the work of the Most High’s hands frees us from destructive comparisons and fills us with a deep sense of personal worth.
  • The power of being set apart for God Before Jeremiah was born, God had already set him apart. This reminds us that, as children of God, we have been set apart from the rest of the world for a sacred use. We were not created to live according to the currents of this society or to conform to the empty expectations that surround us, but to reflect the holiness and glory of Him who called us.
  • Equipped and appointed for a specific purpose The Lord not only set Jeremiah apart, but also appointed him a prophet to the nations. Every believer comes into this world with a divine assignment, a unique calling that no one else can fulfill. No matter what your profession or current role in life may be; your true purpose will always be linked to being a useful instrument in God’s hands to bless others and expand His kingdom.
  • Our identity overcomes our human insecurities Often, as happened to Jeremiah, we focus on our age, our lack of experience, or our weaknesses. However, God’s calling is not based on our present abilities, but on what He has already deposited within us from eternity. When our identity is anchored in His Word, human doubts and fears dissipate before the authority of His voice.

Beloved church, how transforming it is to live with the certainty that the Creator of the universe thought of us before time existed. It does not matter what the circumstances of our birth were or what lies the enemy has tried to plant regarding our worth; the absolute truth is that we are immensely loved, known, and set apart by God. Let us set aside excuses, intimidation, and insecurity today. Let us courageously accept the assignment the Father has handed to us, resting in the promise that He who formed us in the womb is the same one who will accompany and empower us every day to fulfill our eternal destiny.

Think About It:

  1. Have you allowed the opinions of others or your own insecurities to define your worth instead of resting in what God says about you?
  2. Are you living according to the purpose for which God set you apart, or have you settled for following the current and empty goals of this world?
  3. Take a moment today to thank God for having intentionally designed you, and ask Him to reveal to you with greater clarity the specific assignment He has for your life.
