Honor God with Your Body
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT
Throughout chapters 4 to 8 of the First Letter to the Corinthians, the apostle Paul addresses with profound pastoral clarity the daily challenges of a church exposed to a permissive and worldly culture. This section touches on crucial topics such as faithfulness in stewardship, church discipline, the biblical resolution of conflicts between brothers, marriage, and moral purity. Paul confronts the false reasoning of those who tried to justify debauchery under the slogan that “everything is permissible,” reminding us that God’s grace is not a license for disorder. Our freedom in Christ must be guided by discernment, love for others, and the revelation that we were purchased by the blood of the Lamb to live holy and consecrated lives.
- Understand that we are stewards and not owners Our life, gifts, time, and material resources do not belong to ourselves; God is the sole owner, and we are simply stewards entrusted with managing what He has lent us. As stewards of the mysteries of God, the first thing required of us is faithfulness, remembering that one day we will have to present ourselves to give a full account of everything we did in this earthly body.
- Discern between what is permissible and what is truly beneficial The mature believer is not satisfied with asking if something is a sin or if it is explicitly forbidden; they honestly ask themselves if that behavior is beneficial to their spiritual health, their family peace, and their testimony. Although we have the freedom to do many things, we must never allow bad habits, excessive spending, or bondages to make us slaves to anything.
- Care for the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit The believer’s body was not created for sexual immorality or for wild living, but to glorify the Lord. When we understand that the Holy Spirit genuinely dwells in us, we are careful with what our eyes look at, we moderate our emotions, we take care of our physical health, and we stay away from everything that could defile or degrade God’s dwelling place.
- Remember the value of the sacrifice that paid for us We are not an accident on this earth nor a cheap trinket; we were bought at the highest price the universe has ever known: the life and precious blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. That extraordinary value the Father bestowed upon us should produce a deep gratitude in our hearts, propelling us to live lives that reflect purity, excellence, and integrity in public and in private.
- Act guided by love and not by the stumbling of others Knowledge and personal freedom without love only serve to inflate pride and cause divisions. In our daily decisions and in the local church, we must seek mutual edification, learning to give up our own rights and comforts if by doing so we prevent a weaker brother from stumbling or turning away from the path of faith.
Do not allow the liberal customs of this world or the impulses of the flesh to govern your mind or ruin the blessed destiny that God has for you. Strip off every habit that does not edify you, set your priorities in order, and consecrate every area of your body, your marriage, and your finances to the service of the Creator. When you honor God in secret and live conscious of His presence within you, His grace sustains your home, His anointing multiplies in your hands, and you walk securely in the fullness of His lasting blessing.
