The Art of Instructing for Eternity
Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. Proverbs 22:6 NLT
In a world that fiercely competes for the attention and heart of our children, spiritual education cannot be something we leave to chance or solely to Sunday school. Protecting the faith of the new generations requires daily intentionality and a deep commitment on the part of parents and leaders. The instruction the proverb writer speaks of is not a simple repetition of rules, but the art of “initiating” or “training” a child in a living relationship with their Creator. If we do not strive to mark the right path today, the world’s system will take care of tracing routes for them that lead them away from their eternal purpose.
- The primary responsibility of the home God has designed the home as the first seminary and the first church. Although teachers and pastors are a valuable help, the deepest influence on a child’s faith comes from what they observe and hear in their own home. Instructing means taking advantage of every everyday moment to show how God intervenes in our reality, transforming the routine into an opportunity for spiritual learning.
- Modeling the truth with example Children have a special radar for detecting inconsistency. We cannot expect them to love the Word if they do not see us reading it, or to seek prayer if we are not men and women of outcry. Protecting their faith involves living an authentic faith in front of them; our example is the ground where the seed of instruction will take deep root.
- Forming a character proof against crisis Instructing in the “right path” includes equipping young people with discernment. We must teach them not only what to believe, but why we believe it, so that when they face contrary ideologies at university or work, they have solid foundations. A well-instructed faith is a faith that knows how to give a reason for its hope and that does not waver before the currents of fashion.
- The promise of perseverance The proverb gives us a powerful hope: what is sown correctly in childhood remains for maturity. Although there may be seasons of distraction or rebellion, spiritual instruction leaves an indelible mark on the conscience. God honors the effort of parents who prioritize the eternal, ensuring that the truth sown will sooner or later bear its fruit.
Do not allow the distractions of modern life to steal the sacred time of forming our children. The greatest inheritance we can leave them is not a bank account or an academic degree, but a heart that knows and loves God. Protecting their faith is an act of spiritual warfare and deep love; it is ensuring that the torch of the Gospel remains lit in the generations to come. Today is the day to resume our role as guides and mentors, trusting that the Lord will multiply our seed and guard the hearts of our little ones until the end.

Think About It:
- What quality time are you specifically dedicating to talking about God with your children or the young people in your environment this week?
- What areas of your own personal testimony do you believe need to be more consistent so that younger people see Christ in you clearly?
Identify a key biblical truth that your children need to strengthen today and look for a creative way to teach it to them through an activity or conversation.
