Make Plans to Stay

MAKE PLANS TO STAY

“Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce.”
Jeremiah 29:5 (NLT)

When God spoke to the people of Israel in exile, He gave them a clear instruction: do not live as temporary foreigners, but establish roots, build, and prosper where you are. This is a powerful lesson for us today.
1. Establishing Roots Brings Commitment and Prosperity
My wife Dinora and I arrived in Las Vegas almost 30 years ago and made plans to stay. We did not come with the mindset of being temporary residents but with the determination to put down roots, serve, and prosper in this city.
2. We Value What Costs Us Sacrifice
There is a saying: “We do not love what does not cost us.” If the church does not cost us prayer, service, and tithes, we will likely not care for it. The same applies to the city we live in—if we do not invest in it, we will hardly appreciate it or be concerned for its well-being.
3. A “Just Passing Through” Mentality Prevents Growth
Many people never see Las Vegas or the United States as their permanent home, but only as a temporary place to gather resources before returning to another country. This mindset limits their spiritual, family, social, and financial growth.
4. Loving the City We Live in Is Key to Success
When we do not love the place where God has placed us, it will be difficult to prosper in it. God wants us to flourish where we are, to get involved, and to work for the well-being of our community.
“Build homes, and plan to stay…”
Jeremiah 29:5 (NLT)
Think About It:

  • Have you adopted a mindset of permanence in the place where you live, or do you still think of yourself as just passing through?
  • How can you invest more in your community and local church?

What practical steps can you take to build and prosper where God has placed you?
