Suddenly, Leprosy Broke Out

SUDDENLY, LEPROSY BROKE OUT

“Uzziah, who was holding an incense burner, became furious. But as he was standing there raging at the priests before the incense altar in the Lord’s Temple, leprosy suddenly broke out on his forehead.”
2 Chronicles 26:19 (NLT)

What can cause a leader at the peak of success to be suddenly destroyed? In the story of King Uzziah, we see that leprosy was the consequence of his pride and arrogance. His downfall began when he stopped recognizing the limits of his calling and attempted to take on roles that did not belong to him.
1. Pride and Arrogance Destroy a Leader
Uzziah was a king, but he was not a priest. However, in his arrogance, he tried to assume a role that God had not given him. Power and influence can intoxicate a leader, making them believe they are above correction and spiritual authority.
2. An Intoxicated Leader Becomes Manipulative and Controlling
When a leader is driven by ego, they become narcissistic, impose their way of thinking, and refuse to allow others to suggest different perspectives. They do not want to be held accountable and forget that their empowerment comes from God, not from themselves.
3. Leprosy Represents a Sick Soul
In the Bible, leprosy symbolizes sin and internal corruption. Today, we might compare it to:

  • Hidden sin
  • Character flaws
  • A diseased soul
  • Toxic emotions (hatred, bitterness)
  • Narcissism and pride
  • Spiritual blindness
  • Controlling attitudes

4. How Does a “Leprous” Leader Live?

  • They live in isolation because their attitude pushes people away.
  • They become toxic and spread negativity to those around them.
  • No one wants to be near them; those who stay do so out of obligation or because they have no other choice.
  • They lack genuine friendships because their pride prevents others from approaching them with honesty.

“So King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in isolation in a separate house, for he was excluded from the Temple of the Lord…”
2 Chronicles 26:21 (NLT)
Think About It:

  • Am I allowing pride to affect my leadership?
  • Am I taking on roles that God has not called me to, simply because I want to control everything?
  • How can I maintain a humble heart, fully surrendered to God, to avoid “spiritual leprosy”?
