You Do Not Belong to Yourselves
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself.
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT)
We live in a culture that exalts personal autonomy. From a young age, we’re taught to be independent, to make our own decisions, and to fight for our freedom. And to a certain extent, this has value: respect for human dignity, free will, and the ability to choose are all gifts from God. However, the apostle Paul reminds us of something that transcends our modern perception of independence: we do not belong to ourselves.
This statement is not an imposition—it’s a revelation. When we give our lives to Christ, we acknowledge that we were bought at a price, and now our life, our body, and our choices should be guided by the One who redeemed us. It’s not about losing freedom, but about changing lordship. We no longer live for ourselves, but for the One who gave His life for us. This truth transforms the way we use our bodies, especially when it comes to purity and decisions that bring healing.
1. Our Body Is Not Ours, It Belongs to God
Though we have free will, our bodies were created by God and redeemed by Christ. He not only formed us but paid the highest price for us. Therefore, our decisions should reflect this truth: we are temples of the Holy Spirit, not just autonomous individuals.
2. Sexual Immorality Is a Sin Against the Body
Paul is clear: sexual sin doesn’t just affect the soul, but also the physical body. In a world that trivializes sexuality, this reminder is vital. When we live with the awareness that our body is a temple of the Spirit, we avoid practices that harm and dishonor it.
3. God Respects Your Free Will, but Calls You to Responsibility
God doesn’t force anyone. He gives instructions, offers His Spirit, and invites us to obey. But He also makes it clear that our choices have consequences. True freedom is not doing whatever I want, but having the wisdom to choose what honors God.
4. Honoring God with Our Body Is a Healing Decision
When we choose to flee sexual sin and live in purity, we bring healing to the soul, body, and relationships. The world says following your bodily desires is freeing, but often that leads to guilt, harm, and confusion. Living according to God’s design brings healing and peace.
5. The Holy Spirit Lives in You—Care for His Dwelling Place
We are not empty houses. God’s Spirit lives in us, and that changes everything. Our minds, actions, and relationships should reflect the presence of a holy God within us. This isn’t about religion—it’s about reverence.
6. Identity in Christ Redefines Our Choices
We are no longer our own. We belong to Christ. Our identity is not rooted in our freedom but in our redemption. That identity redefines how we use our bodies, how we love, how we serve, and how we choose.
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself.

Think About It:
• Am I making decisions with my body as if it only belongs to me?
• How can I honor the Holy Spirit who lives in me with every action I take?
• What decisions should I start making today regarding my body and my purity?
