Heart and Money

Heart and Money

“But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?’”
Acts 5:3 (NKJV)

The episode of Ananias and Sapphira shows us how money can reveal the true condition of the heart. It was not merely about keeping part of the profit, but about lying to the Holy Spirit. This account is not simply a warning about finances, but a profound teaching about integrity, faithfulness, and the relationship between the heart and money.

  • Money reveals what is in the heart
Jesus said: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21 NKJV). How we handle money reflects in whom and in what we trust. If our hearts are full of greed, our financial decisions will reveal it.
  • The love of money produces deception
The problem is not money itself, but the love of money. Greed can lead us to lie, manipulate, or take dishonest shortcuts. As 1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV) says, this disordered love is a root of all kinds of evil and causes deep wounds in the lives of those who fall into it.
  • Lying with money is lying to God
Peter was clear: Ananias had not lied to men but to God Himself. The Holy Spirit knows every detail of our actions and motivations. We cannot hide anything from Him; that is why it is vital to live in transparency and faithfulness.
  • Generosity protects us from greed
Giving cheerfully, tithing, and offering wholeheartedly is not only obedience, but also a practice that keeps our hearts from being ruled by money. By releasing, we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and that we are only stewards.
  • Financial faithfulness is part of spiritual life
Being “blessable” means being trustworthy before God in financial matters. If we are faithful with little, He will entrust us with more (Luke 16:10 NKJV). Our testimony is also reflected in the way we use resources.

May our hearts never be filled with greed, but with the Holy Spirit, and may our decisions regarding money reflect integrity, trust, and generosity toward God and others.

“But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?’”
Acts 5:3 (NKJV)

Think About It:

  1. What does my way of handling money reveal about my heart?
  2. Am I using my resources to honor God or to feed greed?
  3. How can I grow in generosity and faithfulness in my financial life?
