Steps, Altar, Nakedness

Steps, Altar, Nakedness

“Nor shall you go up by steps to My altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.”
Exodus 20:26 (NKJV)

God gave Israel clear instructions on how to approach His altar, reminding them that His presence is holy and that they must come with humility and reverence. This teaching reminds us that we cannot come before God with pride, trying to “climb” by our own strength or pretensions. He knows our nakedness, our weaknesses, and sins, and yet He receives us and covers us with His grace.
The altar is the place of God’s holiness
The altar represents the place where the presence of the Lord is, where His glory and holiness are manifested. There we recognize that He is God and we are only His children, dependent on His mercy.
The steps symbolize the desire to climb
Many times, we want to climb to positions, fame, or influence, comparing ourselves with others. It is not wrong to aspire to grow spiritually and become more like Jesus, but it is dangerous when we want to take God’s place or boast in our own strength.
Nakedness reveals shame and imperfection
Nakedness speaks of our flaws, the shame of past sin, and our present struggles. Even if we try to cover ourselves, before God we are exposed. Only the grace of Christ can clothe us with new garments.
Jesus is the One who covers us
In the light of His holiness, we see how insufficient we are, but we also remember that His blood cleanses us, covers us, and sanctifies us. He gives us security as children of God and keeps us in a continuous process of sanctification.
Humility to approach His altar
God wants us to draw near to Him without pride, without pretending to rise by our own merits, but with grateful hearts that depend on His grace.
Let us never forget that we are imperfect before the altar, but we have been clothed with the new garments Christ gave us at the cross.

“Nor shall you go up by steps to My altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.”

Exodus 20:26 (NKJV)

Think About It:

  • Have you tried to “climb steps” in your life out of pride or by comparing yourself with others?
  • In what ways do you recognize your spiritual nakedness before God and accept His grace?
  • What steps can you take today to approach the altar with humility and gratitude?
