Pride Goes Before a Fall
Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 (NLT)
Pride is one of the most dangerous attitudes in spiritual life, because it makes us believe we do not need God. When a person is filled with pride, they begin to trust in their own strength, wisdom, and ability, forgetting that everything they have comes from the Lord. This verse warns us that pride does not elevate a person, but rather prepares them for a fall. God desires that we walk in humility, recognizing our total dependence on Him.
- Pride distances us from God Pride creates a false sense of self-sufficiency. When we believe we can do everything on our own, we stop seeking God. Humility, on the other hand, keeps us close to His presence and under His guidance.
- Pride distorts our perspective Pride makes us see ourselves incorrectly. We can come to think that we are more capable or more important than we actually are. This attitude makes us vulnerable to errors and wrong decisions.
- Humility protects us from a fall Recognizing our dependence on God keeps us firm. Humility allows us to listen to advice, learn, and grow. God gives grace to the humble and sustains them in difficult times.
- Pride prevents spiritual growth A proud person does not recognize their mistakes or accept correction. This limits their growth. Humility, instead, opens the door to learning and transformation.
- Humility honors God and opens doors When we walk in humility, we recognize that everything comes from God. This attitude honors the Lord and allows Him to lift us up in the right time.
God desires for us to live with a humble heart, recognizing that everything we are and have is thanks to Him. Humility does not weaken us; it strengthens us because it keeps us connected to the source of all wisdom and power. Walk in humility, and God will sustain you and guide you firmly.
