Authority Brings Order
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. Romans 13:1-2 NLT
The concept of authority is fundamental to understanding the functioning of the Kingdom of God and human society. The apostle Paul teaches us that order is not an accident, but the result of a divine design that establishes hierarchies for our protection and well-being. In a world that often exalts absolute independence and rebellion as forms of freedom, the Bible reminds us that true order is born from a heart that recognizes God’s sovereignty reflected in the institutions and people He has allowed to lead us.
- The divine origin of authority Every legitimate power has its root in God. By understanding that it is the Lord who sets up and removes rulers, leaders, and those in charge, our obedience ceases to be an act of submission to a man to become an act of worship and trust in the Creator’s absolute control.
- The protection that order provides Authority was not instituted to oppress, but to establish limits that allow coexistence and development. When we respect the established order in the church, family, and society, we place ourselves under a spiritual covering that keeps us from chaos and the consequences of lawlessness.
- Rebellion as resistance to God The text is emphatic: rebelling against authority is rebelling against God’s design. The heart’s attitude matters as much as the external action. A spirit of constant complaining or insubordination weakens our spiritual life because it disconnects us from the flow of blessing that comes through subjection.
- Responsibility and consequences Holding a position of authority carries great responsibility before God, but respecting it also brings a promise of peace. Conversely, ignoring the established order carries natural and spiritual consequences, for God cannot back what ignores His own principles of government.
Living under authority requires humility and a deep faith that God is able to work even through imperfect leaders. When we decide to honor the order He has instituted, we are declaring that we trust more in His sovereignty than in our own opinions. Order brings peace, peace brings clarity, and clarity allows us to fulfill the purpose that heaven has traced for us. Let us, then, be examples of integrity and respect, reflecting the character of Christ, who being the King of kings, perfectly submitted to the Father’s will.

Think About It:
- Do I have a teachable and submissive heart toward the authorities God has placed over my life (pastors, bosses, leaders)?
- In what way does my attitude toward the laws and regulations of my country reflect my testimony as a child of God?
- Identify an authority figure with whom you struggle to deal and spend some time today praying for them, asking God to guide them and to give you a spirit of honor.
