Press On Toward the Goal

Press On Toward the Goal

No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:13-14 NLT

The Christian walk is not a hundred-meter dash, but a marathon of endurance that requires an unwavering focus. The apostle Paul, writing from a prison, teaches us that the secret of spiritual victory does not reside in immediate perfection, but in holy persistence. Many believers stop along the way because they carry the weight of previous failures or settle for yesterday’s achievements. Life in Christ demands a mindset of continuous advancement, where our identity is not defined by where we were, but by where we are headed through God’s calling.

  • The humility to recognize the process Paul begins by admitting that he has not yet “achieved it.” Spiritual maturity starts with the humility to recognize that there is always room to grow. Those who believe they have already reached the summit stop striving, but those who recognize their need for God keep moving toward His presence.
  • The art of forgetting the past We cannot run forward if we are looking backward. “Forgetting” in this context is not having amnesia, but removing from the past the power to stop us. Whether they are forgiven sins, wounds received, or old victories, we must release them so that our hands are free for the new things God has for us.
  • Concentrating on the eternal The apostle says: “I focus on this one thing.” In a world full of distractions, faith requires a selective focus. We must learn to say “no” to what sidetracks us and fix our gaze on God’s will, which is the only thing that carries eternal weight.
  • The drive toward the heavenly prize The motivation for our race is not human recognition, but the “heavenly prize.” We run because there is a glorious life waiting for us and because Christ Himself is our goal. Every step of obedience today is an investment in the eternal reward that God has prepared for His children.

Do not allow tiredness or yesterday’s mistakes to steal your breath to keep moving forward. God’s grace is the fuel that allows us to get up after every fall. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of the faith, and keep advancing with the certainty that the path you travel has a glorious purpose. Your goal is not a position in this world, but the fullness of life in Christ that begins here and is perfected in heaven.

Think About It:

  • What situation from my past (whether an error or a success) is preventing me from moving forward with freedom in my present with God?
  • What is the main “distraction” today that is stealing my concentration from the spiritual goal that the Lord has set for me?
  • Write a specific spiritual goal for this month and ask the Holy Spirit to give you the strength to “press on” toward it without fainting.
